WELCOME TO MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE,EMILY
Emily Kimelman was born in Philadelphia in 1980. Her family quickly moved to Texas and from there onto Moscow.
It was in Russia that Emily had her first memories, her first dreams, and learned language. Emily’s father, Donald, read to her every night and so she learned story telling too.
But Emily could not learn how to read or write. She had to repeat Kindergarten and it took many years, and a specialized education before she finally read. Emily was 12, and back in Philadelphia when she read for the first time. It was a sign on the side of the road that said “dozen roses, $5.99”. It was an epiphany.
From then on Emily read everything. What she loved most was mysteries. But she never thought that she could write. Then Emily read a terrible book about cat detectives where the culprit turned out to be aliens! And she thought, Jesus, I think I can do better than that. So she wrote Unleashed and then she wrote it’s sequel.
At the urging of her amazing husband, her brother, and her best friend, Emily published Unleashed in April of 2011, after her agent valiantly had tried to sell it to NY publishers for 3 years.
Now Emily works with her husband, Sean Gilvey, in their glassblowing business, writes novels, and plays with her awesome dog, Kinsey
NOW OUR INTERVIEW WITH EMILY:
MBA: Tell us a little about yourself, your likes or dislikes?
I love horses, drinking great wine with friends, cooking large meals with lots of helpers, camping and writing. I do not like QuickBooks, waking up early, when my dog finds a chicken bone on the street or Vegemite (go ahead, you know you want to Google it). *smiles*
MBA: Who or what inspired you to become an author of murder/mystery?
It took me a very long time to learn to read, but when I was about 11 it suddenly made sense to me. I went from reading “See Spot Run” to Agatha Christie, overnight. My father had read me “The Hardy Boys”, “Nancy Drew”, and “Encyclopedia Brown” so I was familiar with the genre, but Agatha Christie was the first author that I’d read on my own. I can still remember racing through Christie’s books; I was filled with excitement about the mystery and about how many pages I could get through in a sitting. I guess that I fell in love with mysteries as soon as I could read them.
MBA: Do you feel a deep connection to your character, Joy, if so why?
Yes, Joy is named after my wonderful grandmother, Joy Hubert. But Joy Humbolt is nothing like my Grandma. Joy is like me except shorter, gray eyed, and a badass.
MBA: Tell us in your own words a little about “Unleashed”, if you can?
I am fascinated by the role that crime, especially murder, plays in human society. People’s notions of justice are different not only among communities, but also on an individual level.
In “Unleashed” I played with that line between an individual’s moral code, sense of justice and what society in general would agree with. I ask the questions: “At what point are we as individuals OKAY with vigilantism? and “At what point would an entire community be OKAY with it?” I wanted to take the reader on that journey.
MBA: What knowledge or feeling do you hope your readers will come away with by reading “Unleashed”?
Excitement! When I wrote the last paragraph of “Unleashed” I felt a huge rush; I really hope that it comes through.
MBA: Where do you see the future of the Sydney Rye series?
In a million different places! I see Sydney in dusty piazzas in Europe, on horseback galloping across the Mongolian Steppe, falling madly in love, getting her heart broken. This chick is living one heck of a life.
MBA: Can you give our readers any tidbits on the next Sydney Rye installment?
In the next installment, Sydney Rye is in Mexico and the Caribbean looking for a missing girl. When she finds the child; that’s when the mystery really begins.
