From the author’s website:

Christine Amsden has been writing science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.

At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition  that effects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams. (You can learn more here.)

Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children, Drake and Celeste.

After Touch of Fate’s release, the most common question I received from the reading public was: Are the prophetic powers in this story based on personal experiences?

The first time I heard this question, I probably stammered like an idiot. It had simply never occurred to me that anyone would have that expectation, and I even began to wonder if it should have been based on a real-world psychic experience – if not my own, then someone else’s. There are plenty of stories, plenty of mysteries, and lots of wonder to explore in the world, after all.

The truth is, I’m a skeptic. I don’t actually believe in psychic powers in the real world, though I have a lot of fun playing make believe in my books, and in my dreams. I don’t specifically disbelieve in them, either – a true skeptic looks for evidence and does not close her mind.

Has anything strange ever happened to me? A couple of times I swear I knew (guessed?) someone was going to show up someplace before he or she did. I’ve known (guessed?) who would be on the phone when it rang, even when it wasn’t someone who normally called. If it happened more regularly, I might question it, but if these are evidence of a sixth sense, then in my case, it is terribly underdeveloped.

For the most part, though, I like to play make believe. When I write, I use make believe to explore personal issues and questions that are meaningful to me at the time. Marianne has the power to predict the future, but feels powerless to alter its course. To me, this was a story, not about psychic powers, but about feeling out of control, and about learning to accept the things you can’t change while embracing the power you do have to make a difference.

Why use psychic powers? Because it’s fun. Because it’s magical. Because it exaggerates the message in a way that puts it under a magnifying glass.

This is a work of fiction, one I very much hope you will enjoy.

Marianne knows the future can’t be changed, but sometimes even a lifetime of experience can’t keep her from wanting to try. Sometimes, it’s too personal. With the shadow of a killer looming over her, Marianne is running out of time to learn the truth — about herself, about her power, and about the murderer.
