MBA:Can you tell our readers why you chose to write romantic suspense?

Romantic suspense was a relatively natural evolution for me and my writing. Even though I started out writing sexy contemporaries, I always loved reading really dark, gritty romantic suspense. My first published book, DELICIOUS had a significant suspense thread – almost too significant! When I gave it to a friend and fellow writer to read, she was like, “this is good, but aren’t you trying to write something light and fun? Your villain is doing some really creepy stuff.” So I toned it down, but when my then editor was looking to fill a romantic suspense hole in their publishing schedule I jumped on it. I got a chance to channel all of my frustrations into all the dark and scary stuff that happens in my books.  BEG FOR MERCY is by far my darkest book yet.

MBA: Can you tell us a few tidbits about the next story in this new trilogy?

The next book in the trilogy is HIDE FROM EVIL, and it features Sean Flynn, who is featured heavily in BEG FOR MERCY, and Krista Slater, one
of the prosecuting attorneys who helped put Sean on death row.  Sean has quite a bone to pick with Krista, for obvious reasons, so it was really fun to throw them together and force them to lean on each other to take down the people who conspired to frame Sean.
MBA: Can you tell our readers something about you that most people don’t know ?

I can recite every line to Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.
MBA: How hard was the research for this new trilogy? And where did you go to find info?

I must say I got quite the crash course in the death penalty and the appellate process. In fact, this book was originally going to take place in California, but I wanted the main story to take place relatively soon after Sean’s arrest, and it soon became clear that in order for that to happen I would have to change locations. Did you know that in California it takes an average of 10 years to process the first appeal for a prisoner on death row? So for my premise to work in California, and for Sean to have gone through at least two appeals, it would have had to take place twenty
years from the initial arrest.  So I chose to set the story in Washington State, which has a very small population of prisoners on death row, so therefore things move quite a bit faster. As for doing the actual research, the internet is an amazing resource. I’ve also found most people are
happy to talk to you on the phone when you explain you’re a writer doing research. It cracks me up though, the things I know. Like, I bet none of the
other moms in my son’s preschool class know the Washington State Penitentiaries death visitation policies for inmates in the Intensive Management Unit (maximum security where death row inmates are held.)
MBA: How did you know who would be the villian(s)?

With this book, like my last books, I didn’t know who the villains were until about 100 pages or so in. I mean, I usually knew their objectives, but the details of their connection to the hero or heroine don’t usually fall into place until I’ve written for awhile. I’m always amazed by writers who get to the last fifty pages and are like, “okay, time to decide who the villain is!” That being said, for HIDE FROM EVIL and the third book in the trilogy, RUN FROM FEAR, I knew the villains and their connections to the main characters before I wrote the first word.
