SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO WELCOME,LEE GOLDBERG……

I grew up loving those “men’s action adventure” paperback novels of the 60s, 70s, and 80s…series like The DestroyerThe Ninja MasterNick Carter: Killmaster and The Death Merchant. You could find them in finer supermarkets, gas stations, 7-11s and bookstores everywhere. They were the male equivalent of Harlequin romances, though the only romance was often between a man and his AK-47.

The books were short and tightly-written, with hard-boiled heroes, outrageously sexy women, and gleefully over-the-top plots. Nobody would ever mistake them for great literature, but they were enormous fun to read…and to write. I know, because I broke into publishing in the mid-1980s writing one of those series–357 Vigilante by “Ian Ludlow”–while I was still in college (they are now available again as The Jury Seriesin ebook and paperback editions).

Sadly, the “men’s action adventure” series novels are virtually extinct now, early victims of the narrowing of the paperback marketplace.

But then one day, about four months ago, I realized that the Kindle offers the perfect medium for the revival of the genre…and that I had the right idea for the series sitting in a dusty corner of my hard-drive. The project was The Dead Man, a TV series concept that Bill Rabkin & I pitched around Hollywood over 20 years ago. The pitch went something like this:

There is good, and there is evil.
On November 12th, Matthew Cahill died, buried in an avalanche of snow.
On February 20th, Matthew Cahill came back to life.
Nothing has changed.
There is still good, and there is still evil.
Only now… he can see it.

Each day has become a journey into a dark world he knows nothing about…a quest for the answers to who he is and what he has become…and a fight to save us, and his soul, from the clutches of pure evil.
Execs always seemed to love the pitch, but we were never able to clinch the sale, and gave up on it a few years back.

But now it seemed to me that the ebook was the perfect medium for it….and we had the pilot script and the outlines for 12 episodes already written. It took me maybe 30 seconds to convince Bill to go along with idea…and we both agreed we wanted to do this with other writers, to create a hybrid between the old method of publishing these “men’s action adventure series” and what we’d learned from our years running network TV shows.

On a TV series, freelance writers and staff writers get credited for their episodes. But in most “men’s action adventure” book series, the freelance writers do not get credited. Either the “original writers” are credited for every book (like Don Pendleton on Mack Bolan, or Warren Murphy & Richard Sapir on The Destroyer) or all the credit goes to a shared house name (like “Tabor Evans” on Longarm etc.) The freelance writers are buried in small type on the copyright page (“Special thanks and acknowledgment to Kevin Dangler for his contributions to this work”)…if they even get mentioned at all. And the writers rarely, if ever, communicate with one another.

But we knew we didn’t want to do it that way on The Dead Man. We wanted the writers credited in big type on the cover…so everyone would know it was their unique take on our character, like a singer covering someone else’s song. We were eager to see what writers who we greatly admired, with similar sensibilities to ours, would do with the character and the concept. In some ways, that’s the most exciting part of The Dead Man  to us.

On a TV series, stories are plottied in a room with a group of other writers, everyone working together towards a common goal — X number of great episodes. So we’ve created a virtual writer’s room using Google groups. We aren’t plotting each book as a group, but we are all talking to one another, sharing pointers, asking for help, etc…with Bill and I supervising the whole thing and having the final word.

We managed to cajole a bunch of other writers into the fold. Not just any writers… but some of the very best western, horror, mystery, and science fiction scribes out there, including Marcus Pelegrimas, Joel Goldman, David McAfee, Matt Ellis (aka “James Axler”), Jude Hardin, Bill Crider, James Reasoner, David McAfee, Matt Witten, Burl Barer, Harry Shannon, Mel Odom, and James Daniels, to name a few.

Together, we’re hoping we can recapture the spirit and pure escapism of the thousands of books written during the heyday of “men’s action adventure.”

The third book in the Dead Man series, Hell in Heaven, by me and Bill is out now. New books are coming about every month.

You don’t have to read the books in order, or even the first two in the series (Face of Evil by Bill & me and Ring of Knives by James Daniels) to know what’s going on…each book works as a standalone. But, of course, I hope you won’t believe me and will rush out and read the others, too.

The rise of the ebook makes cheap, short action novels viable and exciting again, giving me and my fellow Dead Man authors the thrilling opportunity to indulge our great affection for the genre… and hopefully, to get you hooked on it, too.

THE DEAD MAN: RING OF KNIVES by James Daniels,Lee Goldberg, and William Rabkin is an interesting paranormal novella. This is the second in “The Dead Man series”,but can be read as a stand alone. It is fast paced, action paced, a quick read that is full of surprises. Matt is who after being dead for three months, found and is now alive has a secret (gift) although,I am sure he does not call it a gift. For he sees in evil in people as decaying bodies, pus draining sores on their faces and other nasty and bad smelling things. Matt is out to found out the truth of good vs evil.He believes if he can found out who Dr. Dark really is he will be able to find out the truth. He really doesn’t know if he is good or evil.I myself vote for good. While on this journey takes him to a mental facility,a “nuthouse” in every sense of the word, he will find that evil is in all of us.For he finds more evil here than he thought possible. He try to save not only himself but also a young teenage girl, who they are trying to defile. This is a fast paced, action packed, thriller with paranormal,a little fantasy and a lot of evil.It is sure to please any and all thriller, action, suspense, fantasy and paranormal readers. While this is a quick read packed into a huge story it will have you wondering what is next. This book was received for the purpose of review from the Kaye Publicity and the author details can be found at Createspace.
