So set back with your favorite beverage and enjoy….
MBA: When did you know you wanted to write books and when did you actually start?
Thanks so much for having me as a guest on your blog.
I didn’t really aspire to be a writer for years like some have. I’ve been writing professionally for about five years. I think it’s the greatest job in the world and wish I had started earlier. I have always been very interested in books and have read tons during my life.
MBA: Were you a fan of the paranormal genre when you grew up or did it come to you while writing?
I have always loved the paranormal. When I was three years old, we lived in a very old house. At night, I cried and wanted my mom to sit with me until I fell asleep. I kept telling her about the men who lived up by ceiling in my room and could not understand why she did not see them. Mom still talks about that today. I think children and animals see ghosts because they do not know what they are. To them, they’re just people. I don’t recall much from that age, but I recall seeing the little people in my room. And I was terrified.
MBA: What author(s) have influenced your writing style?
It’s so hard to select favorite authors. I really like a book written by a husband and wife team from the 1980’s called Windflower, a pirate historical. And I adore Joanna Bourne’s writing. She wrote the Spymaster series. I enjoy Helen Kirkman, Roberta Gellis, and again they write mostly historical. I have many books calling to me from my shelves and nightstand and I’m trying to get to them. These are mostly urban fantasy and paranormal contemporaries.
MBA: Who is your favorite character from any of your books?
Many reviewers mention they found Ethan Gray (Meko) from Where The Rain Is Made fascinating. He’s a time wanderer who travels back to help his beloved People, the Cheyenne, in their real-life struggles against the white man.
MBA: How do you want readers to feel after they read your stories?
Satisfactory escapism for one. If a writer can transport the reader to another believable time and place, allow them to cast aside their everyday troubles for a spell, I think she/he has accomplished their goal. All writers hope the reader still thinks about the book long after they’ve set it aside. How many books have you read that you enjoyed, yet months later, you can’t remember much about it? I strive for lasting thoughts about my books. Ideally, I’d love it if readers say, “Oh, yes, I read Where The Rain Is Made and thought about the characters, the story for months.” A lofty goal, but one I try to achieve. No one wants his or her books to be forgettable.
MBA: What do you think is the best thing about being a writer? What do you think is the worst thing about it?
The best thing about being a writer is the independence and freedom writing offers. You work for yourself basically with no one standing over you cracking the whip. Of course, you have to be disciplined if you expect to make a living at writing. That means, put your butt in the chair every day and write.
The worst thing about being a writer is the solitary life you lead. Yes, you meet many great people online, but if you write for a living, it’s just you and your laptop.
MBA: What do you think makes a good story?
Ah, the story itself of course. You can have the most fascinating characters but without a great plot, the characters won’t do you much good. I think people love to immerse themselves in fictitious worlds where ordinary people prevail and triumph. Whether that’s an alternate world or our world as we know it, it’s human nature to root for the hero or heroine, journey with them as they overcome insurmountable odds and defeat villains. That world better be compelling, complete with twisted paths and surprising circumstances. One good example is Cold Mountain. Yes, the characters were engrossing, but what happened to them along their journeys made this a stellar read.
