A Glamorous Day in the Life of a Romance Writer

6:00
Alarm goes off while dreaming about latest plot. Husband hits sleep button — five times. Upon threat of death, he turns off alarm, rolls toward me and begs “caffeine”.

7:00
Have sent husband and oldest daughter off to work and school. Only two children left until I’m alone to work on current project that’s due yesterday.

8:00
Said children can’t find gloves or lunch or homework. Puppy ate them. All of them.

9:00
After cleaning up dog puke and driving children to school, I sit down on the deck with my laptop. Breathe in the delicious mountain air. Prepare to feel inspired. Instead see a bear in the woods and run inside.

10:00
After a large bag of cookies I feel inspired by sugar rush. Write a few pages while on the couch. Decide maybe what I really need is a plotting session. Lie down on couch with cozy blanket and plot with my eyes closed.

10:30
Woken from nap by phone. Middle child has lost lunch money.

11:00
Manage a few more pages before starvation sets in. Early lunch. I’ll get lots down this afternoon for sure.

12:00
Another page before email break. No email. Hmm. Maybe I should try harder to be friendly instead of snarling at anyone who interrupts. Note to self. No more snarling.

1:00
Call from editor. Last book that I loved? Major revisions needed. By yesterday.

1:30
Call from other editor. Last book that I loved? Major revisions needed. By yesterday.

2:00
Back in kitchen for more fortification.

3:00
Children home. Hot, tired, hungry, grumpy. Break up three fights before soccer practice.

5:00
Dinnertime. Forgot to cook. Back out in the car to Taco Bell.

6:00
Maybe I’ll sneak in one more page. Take another look at list of revisions, feel sick, head back into kitchen.

8:00
Kids to bed. Too tired to work, sit on couch with a good book. Not mine.

9:00
Husband wakes me up with a hopeful smile. I’m going to need caffeine.

NOW FOR OUR INTERVIEW WITH JILL SHAVIS,AUTHOR OF “THE SWEETEST THING”……

BY JILL SHAVIS:

Writing a romance called The Sweetest Thing, which centers around a decidedly NOT sweet heroine, amused me. Tara Daniels is wound a little tight and likes things her way. She’s also a former southern belle who appreciates the fact that she’s right. A lot.

The Sweetest Thing? Not exactly.

But her heart’s in the right place, always. And, as it turns out, there’s a man who melts her like butter on a hot roll. Not only that, he can soften her in a way that she isn’t sure she likes. See, Tara thinks she has it all together, but it turns out she doesn’t. She doesn’t know a lot about herself. About all she has is the fact that she can cook like nobody’s business. Oh, how she loves to cook.

Tara was a challenge for me. Because here’s where I admit, I got a lot of her recipes from my husband. True story. I’m married to a big guy who works with his hands and is the ultimate Alpha Man — and yet he can cook. Don’t try to figure him out, it’ll hurt your brain, trust me.

The recipe Good Morning Sunshine Casserole that Tara cooks in the book is all his. Just don’t tell him I “borrowed” it and am telling the world that it’s my heroine’s. It’d just go to his head.

P.S. For an ebook of Tara’s recipes, look for Heating Up The Kitchen wherever ebooks are sold.

As Tara helps her two sisters get their newly renovated inn up and running, she finally has a chance to get things under control and come up with a new plan for her life. But a certain tanned, green-eyed sailor has his own ideas, such as keeping Tara hot, bothered . . . and in his bed. And when her ex wants Tara back, three is a crowd she can’t control-especially when her deepest secret reappears out of the blue. Now Tara must confront her past and discover what she really wants. If she’s lucky, she might just find that everything her heart desires is right here in Lucky Harbor.

                 EXCERPT FROM “THE SWEETEST THING”….

The Sweetest Thing

Ford raised a brow in Tara’s direction. She pretended not to notice as she walked her date out. When she came back into the kitchen, Ford was waiting for her, clearly amused. “You used me to dump your date.”

“Dumped is … harsh.”

“It’s accurate.”

“It’s accurate,” she agreed, and sighed. “He had bad breath.”

“Well then.”

“This isn’t funny, Ford. I needed a damn date.”

“That’s not what I would have guessed.”

She narrowed her eyes. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” he said with a faint smile. “That I remember how you get when you’re uptight and anxious. I also remember the only that would relax you.”

She had a flash to a long ago night, on the docks after a fight with her mother that had left her shaky and alone. Ford had found her, and in shocking little time had her forgetting both her troubles.

Naked therapy, Ford style.

It’d worked, and at the memory, she felt heat flood her face. “Yes, well, sex isn’t on the table at the moment.”

Now he flashed her his bad boy grin. “I was talking about how we used to lie on the marina dock and count stars, but your idea has merits too. Come here, Tara.”

Said the spider to the fly. “I don’t think so.”

He smiled again and poured her some wine, looking comfortable in his own skin as he leaned back against the counter, his own glass dwarfed in his big hand.
