Today it is our great pleasure to welcome author “C.J. LYONS”to My Book Addiction and More. So please sit back and enjoy our interview and if you have a burning question to ask yourself feel free to do so.

1. What kind of planning and research goes into your writing?

>>For my medical thrillers like the Berkley Angels of Mercy series, I didn’t have to do a lot of research about how people work and interact in the ER or any of the emotional impact, but I still do research the actual medical cases and look for any changes in the practice of medicine.

For my standalone thrillers, like SNAKE SKIN, I try to interview and work with the professionals the stories are about. SNAKE SKIN centers on a FBI special agent working crimes against children. I actually visited the FBI Academy in Quantico, stayed with a FBI agent teaching there, and interviewed several other FBI agents, in addition to having great fun firing guns on the range, visiting Hogan’s Alley, being part of a “take down” exercise as well as one on “house clearing.”

Who says research can’t be fun, lol!

For my series co-written with Erin Brockovich, I was totally out of my comfort zone–they don’t center on medicine and aren’t based in a medial environment, so I made a few decisions right away to help streamline the research process (having tight deadlines sometimes force these kind of decisions). First, the settings were ones we were familiar with; for book one, ROCK BOTTOM it was West Virginia and for the second book, HOT WATER, it’s the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

Second, the environmental “hook” or controversy would be something with more than one side–so that the books focus less on the science and more on the people and the impact on their lives. This really helped because it meant we could focus on the characters and let them drive the plot rather than spend a lot of time “preaching” about any one topic.

That being said, a tremendous amount of research went into ROCK BOTTOM, everything from how a dragline sounds and works and smells to the impact of mountain top removal mining to how protestors manage their tree-sitting campaigns.Tons of esoteric topics that raised a lot of eyebrows when I began to ask questions!

2. Tell us about your some of your upcoming projects.

>>ROCK BOTTOM, the first of the Erin Brockovich series came out Tuesday, March 1st. It follows a young single mom, AJ Palladino, as she looses her job and is forced to return to her West Virginia small town where she uncovers some deadly secrets.

I also have a book that is new to the US, although it was already published in Europe: SNAKE SKIN is a mainstream thriller about a FBI agent/soccer mom who must juggle work and family while hunting a predator.

3. Do you feel a deep connection to your characters and why?

>>Yes, absolutely! For me, everything comes from the characters–they drive the plot. What happens to them from outside forces is not interesting to me. What is interesting is WHY they make the choices they make–especially the “bad” ones, so I let that drive the story.

All my characters are flawed and have a lot to learn in life–a lot like me! I think that makes them more human and real. I also think it makes their transformation over the course of a story more empowering for readers–at least I hope so!

4. How do you keep your sanity in our fast paced world today, with all the deadlines, family obligations and such?

>>Actually my writing has always been my way to cope and make sense of the crazy world around us! But because of my background of 17 years of pediatric ER medicine, I’ve learned to thrive in chaos. For me disaster IS opportunity and the biggest danger I face is boredom, so I might have a different perspective than most <g>

5. If you could travel back in time what or who would you be and why?

>>Wow, tough question! I think I’d like to be an apprentice to Leonardo da Vinci–he studied and mastered so many different subjects in both the arts and sciences and that idea of not being forced to “be” the same person everyday but rather taking charge of each day and using it as an opportunity to learn something new or create something that’s never been seen before…I just love that!

From New York Times bestselling author and internationally renowned environmental and consumer advocate Erin Brockovich comes Rock Bottom, a debut thriller and first in a series of novels that introduces one of the most fascinating and memorable characters in suspense fiction.

Ten years ago, a pregnant seventeen-year-old, Angela Joy Palladino, fled her hometown, Scotia, West Virginia, as a pariah. Over time, AJ succeeded in establishing herself as an environmental activist, dubbed “The People’s Champion,” only to be forced to retreat from the spotlight in the wake of a crushing media disaster. When AJ is offered a job with a lawyer who is crusading against mountaintop removal mining, she is torn. As a single mother of a special needs nine-year-old boy, AJ can use any work she can get. But doing so will mean returning to the West Virginia hometown she left in disgrace so long ago. Upon arriving in Scotia, AJ learns of the sudden death of the lawyer who hired her. Soon after joining forces with his daughter, Elizabeth, threats begin to surface, bodies begin to pile up, and AJ discovers that her own secrets aren’t the only ones her mountain hometown has kept buried. Hitting rock bottom, AJ must face the betrayal of those once closest to her and confront the harrowing past she thought she had left behind. In Rock Bottom, Erin Brockovich combines passionate intensity, first-rate storytelling, and her real life experiences in a novel that will leave you breathless.
