PROMPT:  IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING TODAY IN THIS WORLD WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

It’s so nice to be back with you again for my sequel to Captured by Desire, SEDUCED BY DESTINY!  I hope you have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.

When you’re a historical author who spends a good portion of your day in another century, you get a real sense of what things have changed in a few hundred years and what things haven’t.

My books are set in Scotland in the 1500s.  There are drastic physical differences between that world and the world of today…the clothing, the buildings, the food, the landscape, the entertainment, the transportation, the weapons of war.  Anyone who’s been to a Renaissance fair knows what I mean!

Social, political, and religious dictates were stricter than what we have today, though there are plenty of historical examples of people flaunting them…men who habitually slept in and skipped church, women who fought in battle alongside their husbands, lovers who had babies out of wedlock.

So what hasn’t changed?  What is constant?

Human nature.  Feelings, desires, and motivations haven’t changed.  You can experience this when you admire Renaissance artwork, read Shakespeare, or listen to the lyrics of 16th century songs.  You can relate to them, because they express universal emotions.  Just like today, they’re composed on myriad themes…romantic love, jealousy, pity, sorrow, maternal instinct, mercy, revenge, sisterhood, hope.

Bearing in mind the emotional thread that binds us to the past, if I could change anything in today’s world, it would be to strengthen that emotional thread between all people.

The truth is, we all want the same things.  We want to be loved.  We want to be respected.  We want to be healthy.  We want to be happy.  We want to have good food to eat, clean air to breathe, and enough water to survive comfortably.  We want our families to be safe.  We want to feel fulfilled.  And we want to interact peaceably with others.

It doesn’t matter if we’re men or women, Republicans or Democrats, Christians or Muslims, gay or straight.  When we set aside the bickering and nitpicking about how to achieve the end results, those end results are all the same!

If we could connect better emotionally, we could achieve peace and plenty for everyone.  There are examples of this all around us.  On a Christmas Eve during World War I, enemy troops called a truce and gathered to sing Christmas songs.  In 2006, a Palestinian activist and an Israeli pilot teamed up on an Antarctica expedition to “Break the Ice,” made friends, and formed Combatants for Peace.  Athletes, scientists, musicians, firemen, actors, and doctors work together all the time, paying little attention to anyone’s politics, religion, or sexual preference.

I believe as human beings we have more in common than we have differences.  That may be why I like to write star-crossed characters like those in SEDUCED BY DESTINY.  Drew and Jossy come from very different backgrounds and with strong prejudices, but they manage to find their commonalities, cast aside their differences, and let love conquer all.  I think an increased awareness of our own emotional connections would lead us all to that kind of happily-ever-after ending.

Speaking of happily ever after, I hope you’ll check out SEDUCED BY DESTINY.  I also love to hear from readers.  You can friend me at www.facebook.com/kiramorganauthor, follow me on www.twitter.com/kira_morgan, and visit my website at www.glynnis.com/kiramorgan, where you can enter a sweepstakes to win the thimble that Drew gives Jossy in SEDUCED BY DESTINY.

What about you?  What would you change in today’s world and why?
