And following his death and the birth of their mixed-race daughter, Kristen encounters a hail of prejudice and rejection-including from her own family. Now, her refusal to give up her baby and renounce her love leads her on a path of destruction that threatens her very survival. Following a disastrous and abusive marriage, Kristen must reckon with her former husband’s hidden criminal background-and a shadowy world that won’t leave her alone-all while battling extreme racism along the way. Despite a temporary respite in the Queensland outback, the fear of those after her is always there. Then, horror, devastation and guilt force her once again to flee in order to protect her daughter. This time, she might not be so lucky…

MY THOUGHTS:

SMALL MEASURES by Lynne Burke is a compelling action/adventure set in 1964-1965 Australia. It is well written with detail, depth, twists, turns and is fast paced. It is a story of love, hope, devastation, romance, mystery, survival, social classes, guilt, abusive relationships, betrayal of family, friends, death, honor, prejudice, and fighting for what you believe is right even if you have to sacrifice. This is the story of a 12-day love affair between Kristen, a heiress, and an African American Marine on leave from Vietnam. The death of this Marine, the birth of Kristen and their mixed-race daughter, and the struggles Kristen endures to keep her and child safe from danger, prejudice, and extreme racism even from her own family. This is a complex, compelling story that reveals extreme racism, social history of ,that weaves mystery, and romance into the mix. If you enjoy heartwretching, heart breaking story of love, sacrifice, and trying to overcome extreme racism, throw in a little mystery and suspense combine in one story this is definite the one.I would recommend this intriguing, story of survival.
