A day as an author…
Or at least a day as me, being an author. Sounds a bit like make believe, but since we’re heading into Halloween—maybe that fits!
I’m an early riser. In the last couple of years, I’ve had a little help ensuring I continue on with this habit that has earned me many a scowl from my husband… who is not an early riser. The assistance comes from our parrot. He’s lucky he’s so cute because he gets away with everything and then offers me that sweet looking face. Well, he loves to crawl to the bottom of the cage he sleeps in and pull on the metal bars. Pinging noises go through the master bathroom until I get up.
I put the time to good use. Those early morning hours when they house is quiet are when I dig in and get a good start on my word count for the day. My computer is in a downstairs bedroom that also serves as my sewing room. I’ve learned to clean up whatever project I might have been working on before going to bed because it will distract me on a writing day.
Once my boys are up, I get them fed and off to school which eats a fair chunk of time. Once home, emails tend to be rolling in. One of my biggest challenges is to stay off the internet. It handy for research but a real distraction. Sometimes, I get my best work done on my portable mini laptop. I load up my current work in progress and take it along when my boys have weekend events. More than one of their friends has wondered who the lady is trying to kill her keyboard, LOL! I type hard, often chipping off the paint before the keyboard fails.
In the case of Highland Hellcat, I had my idea set for the story but there were a few days there where both Brina and Connor where being stubborn. I know where I wanted to get them but wasn’t entirely sure how to go about it. A few scenes fell to the editing ax because they just didn’t fit. The last thing that’s important to my writing is reading. I try to read one novel after I finish one of my own. You can often find out on my website blog what I’ve been reading. Drop by anyway to discover what I’ve got coming your way. MaryWine.com.

What a wonderful visit. I so enjoy your books. My husband has a parrot also. She talks alot, but the only one she will tell I love you to is my wonderful, beautiful daughter,Wendy, who is really a little girl disguised as a grown up. I think it is great you are a multi-genre author, although, I have to say I enjoy your historical must of all. I also, think it great your family is into the re-eactment. Have a great day. i can hardly wait for your next book. Thanks for giving us such an insight into historical Scotland.
What a wonderful story. Brina and Connor sounds like wonderful characters who make this novel extraordinary and special. I would love to meet them. This historical era in Scotland is so enchanting. I enjoyed learning about this book. Sourcebooks are so filled with great books of all types that I could spend ages browsing. A great and interesting website that I wil continue to visit.
The story looks like a good one. When I went to Mary’s website I saw that she has written over twenty novels. Then on Sourcebooks I found that the founder started the company in her upstairs bedroom with $17,000 that she cashed out from her 401k plan.
This sounds like a fantastic read! The whole highlander series sounds great!
The sourcebooks site looks great! So many books!

I learned she has written over 20 books on her web site. I had never heard of Sourcebooks before so it was interesting to check out their site.
Well to start I have a few books by Mary, historicals, I didn’t realize she also wrote for Elora’s Cave and wrote some westerns. MAry also sews her costumes, I wonder if she sells any or takes comissions I need a scottish dress. Source books , I’ve not heard of them but they have a wide variety of books, this was the first time I’ve been to their site and well to be honest the colors were very subdued and I wouldn’t say I loved it but I may go back again to compare it more with Amazon and Borders where I buy alot of my books.
Hi Mary,
I can’t wait to read Highland Hellcat. My favorite reads are Scottish Highlanders. I love that Mary sews her own Historical clothing. The dress in the picture is an amazing piece of work.
I love the simplicity of Source books. I’m going to go back and check out much more.
