Millicent “Missy” Armstrong is entering her third London Season, but not for lack of suitors. Since her debut three years ago, Missy has received twenty marriage proposals. But she is interested in only one man—her brother’s best friend, James Rutherford. As a child, Missy looked up to James. As a grown up, her admiration has blossomed into the longings of a beautiful, sensuous woman—and she won’t rest until James admits his love—and desire—for her…
James Rutherford rues the day he let his physical weaknesses get the better of him by kissing Missy. His best friend has made it clear that Missy is off limits, and though he’s avoided her for three years, he hasn’t forgotten the feel of her soft lips pressed against his—and it seems neither has she. For no matter how much James tries to discourage Missy, he keeps winding up in her arms, sharing heated caresses that promise the most delirious pleasure. . .
Today, I’m sitting down with Lord James Rutherford, my hero of Sinful Surrender
. What’s become apparent to me over the course of this book is that James has some issues. Sure, they’re probably considered normal for a twenty-eight year old man, but nonetheless, I believe they need to be explored so we can better understand him and he can better understand himself.
Beverly: James, anyone with eyes can see that you are attracted to Missy, so tell me why you are running so hard the other way?
James: I believe the term ‘running’ is a slight exaggeration. What I am doing is avoiding a troubling situation. Yes, I readily admit that she is quite beautiful and holds a certain physical attraction to me—
Me (interrupting): Only physical?
James (looking slightly uncomfortable, clears his throat): Fine, perhaps it is more than physical, but I’ve known Missy for over ten years. It’s normal that I should hold some affection for her. In any case, her brother is my best friend, which makes a pairing between us impossible.
Me: How so?
James: Because she deserves more than I can give her. She wouldn’t be like any other woman. What if things between us did not work out? You can see how that could severely damage my friendship with her brother.
Me: So her brother’s friendship means that much to you? What if she is ‘the one’ for you? Wouldn’t she be worth the risk?
James (shaking his head vigorously): The man is like my brother. No woman is worth the risk to our friendship.
Me: So am I to assume you haven’t touched her intimately? That your friendship gives you that restraint?
James (a dark blush washes his cheekbones as he averts his gaze): I—I—
Me: So even though you realize you are risking one of your dearest and closest friendships, you are unable to keep your hands off of her?
James: (Stares at me silently, his expression inscrutable.)
Me (Sighing): Men. You really are some of the most stubborn creatures. James, I will be honest and give you my assessment of your chances at succeeding in resisting Missy.
James (Angles his head slightly toward me and props his eyebrow in question).
Me: You, my dear, are doomed.
